BASHFUL BEAUTY – GIAMBATTISTA VALLI UNVEILS A MODERN PSYCHE
Pulled from BeyondTheRunways.com archives July 2014:
F/W Couture 2014
When Eros accidentally fell in love with Psyche, he sent the gentle west wind, Zephyr, to swoop her away to a sprawling palace. There, Eros visited her only at night in order to conceal his identity, leaving Psyche to explore and daydream from sunrise to sunset.
On Tuesday morning, Valli gave us a glimpse of Psyche’s world with a modern, 1960’s spin. The show opened with Kaitlin Aas in a boyfriend button down shirt-dress, eyes shrouded from the bright sun, hair pulled back in a simple white napkin. She breathes nonchalant Hollywood glamour reminiscent of Elizabeth Taylor in her peak.
Through the collection, we could sense the curiosity and innocence of Psyche. No skirt was above the knee, yet many pieces, like the floor length shift covered in embroidered flowers and leaves, revealed just the right amount of skin to exude sensuality. The rest of the looks are just as sublime, dripping in stripes and flowers with two opulent fur coats. In a year full of sheer pencil skirts and printed body suits, Valli is able to keep us captured and enthralled.
Despite being a fall show, Valli doesn’t fail to make us crave springtime again. He stayed true to his uncanny ability of bringing effortless, ethereal glamour to the runway; it’s what keeps his young audience yearning for more. Throw in a few signature tailored capes, immaculately adorned flowers, a splash of color, and he’s conjured a dream nothing short of exquisite. In this dream, he is our Zephyr, and we all want to be part of the fantasy.
